Little David Walker spent 5 Hours in Heaven

Boy Preacher's Custody Sought By His Parents
St. Petersburg Times April 29, 1948

...said their son, billed as "Little David" was not getting a proper education and that almost daily sermons threatened "permanent disability" to his voice. They estimated his sermons earned him $1000 per week. The parents asked Juvenile Court to return custody of David to them. They had unwittingly lost control when another evangelist promised to "put Little David in the big time."

Several years later Little David was involved in a water ski accident which put him in a coma briefly. I do not know if he saw Jesus the second time, but he did thank the fireman who saved his life.

Video Killed the Chalk Talk Star (except one)

Chalk Talk. A throwback to the days when convincing the already convinced was entertaining and a bit nuts. As you will see by watching this clip of the master at work, one Peter S. Ruckman. To be fair, he does more than speak in tongues, but if you are interested, other clips of him at work will be seen by those who seek.

Nell E. Mays Girl Preacher who was Stormtost

Nell wrote gospel songs, including "Look away to Jesus" and "What does it matter, O troubled" and most beautifully, at least judging by the title "Stormtost windblown" in 1936.

Rev Elder Bishop Anderson Johnson old time religion

(I previously posted this, my tribute to Anderson Johnson on my other blog Dull Tool Dim Bulb)

The congregation of Reverend Elder Bishop Anderson Johnson numbered in the thousands, but they were virtually all painted by the preacher himself and most hung by threads from the ceiling instead of sitting in pews. Surrounded by crime, blight, drugs and wig shops, he appeared to lead a quiet life on Ivy Street in Newport News, VA following a long career of selfless ministry. I am only now beginning to appreciate, some 15 years after my first visit, how special was his gift and talent. Within the door of his church and home a dark cave of religious passion entirely of his own making awaited. Completely surrounded by his own paintings of "followers" he performed on guitar, pedal steel and piano, hidden within the walls and largely for himself. I was surprised years later to find he had recorded commercially. Despite many conversations about his life, service and mission, he never mentioned his gospel steel guitar recordings made by Henry Stone in Florida in the late 1950's released on the Glory and Angel Labels. I understand there has been a resurgence of steel guitar gospel players in Florida since, I suspect the roots of this movement were planted by Reverend Johnson. He passed away near poverty, but at least one painting was added to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1998. He once told me, in all seriousness, the reason he painted so many portraits was that he hoped to find work as a courtroom artist. The house he transformed was destroyed by urban renewal (which in this case was needed, believe me) Portions of the environment also remain in historic preservation museum projects in Virginia and in private collections. There is a beautiful essay about his life on the website of the Middle Passage Project run by the College of William and Mary. Some of Mr. Johnson's recordings have been reissued, one appears on the Dust-To-Digital "Goodbye, Babylon" box set of 2003. A recording of Rev. Johnson performing "Let that Liar Pass on By"
appears here.

Apostle of the Highways and Man of God

"Apostle of the Highways" William (with no last name) holds the staff he uses to trudge along highways throughout the Southwestern states. William was known to accept rides from strangers only to jump out of the car if they used a profane word. The 98 year old civil war veteran was a familiar figure to travelers in Kansas, but as reported, he "lies stricken" and when asked if he had any kin replied "I don't need relatives" and that his father in heaven will take care of him.

The Dynamic Kernels of Tithing Wheat

Perry Hayden planted a cubic inch of wheat and donated 10% of the harvest to the church and replanted the remainder. He continued this for the following 6 years, resting on the 7th. The amount of land needed for the final crop exceeded 2600 acres. Henry Ford donated much of the necessary land as did many local farmers. The project received much attention including a feature in Life magazine on July 24th 1944.
